So I dont know if anyone still checks this or whatever, but since I'm screwed I guess I'll be the first one to start the mad dash to collect peoples unwanted tickets.

If anyone has one or two tickets to spare for a long time committed volunteering firefly (me) please let me know

Thanks so much

WOW! Have they already sold out?

      Meh!

They sold out within microseconds of each buying period. And sadly, the last ticket group was sold on an earlier date, so no tickets were sold on that slot at all.

I wish that the process could be a little more democratic in the way that tickets are sold. It would seem that everyone buys the allowance of 4 tickets each, and then distributes them privately to their friends (or lets them go to waste...)

That poor server must have been screaming!!!!
Oh well Fuck it! PEX Summer festival is the same wknd. Will do that instead!
Maybe with the raging popularity of FF they need to find a venue which will
allow a bigger cap on attendance? 450 is a pretty severely limited festival!
My love and I went last year, bungled around in the mud and had a pretty good time.
OTOH, seems like a rather cozy bunch of peeps but not really all that "reaching out" IMHO!
If they were to open it up a bit maybe it wouldn't be such an 'in crowd' event!

Really, honestly and truly though... Everyone is calling for a bigger FF. What about the organizers. Can you really imagine that the organizers want to be responsible for more than 450 people? I keep hearing the drumbeat for a bigger fest, but I don't see where people are really taking into account those kind of factors. It's hard enough running a festival for that many people, exponentially increasing that number would be such a hard thing for the people that deeply run this event. Not talking about the parking people or the clean up crew, I'm talking about the whole shebang.

It's easy as a consumer/low level helper to call for a bigger festival... it's another to be one of the people actually creating the festival.

I call BULLSHIT!!! In Seattle we typically have over 1000 people show up for Burning Man
Decompression in an airplane hangar! I used to co-host house parties in Chicago and
we would regularly bring in over 500 people throughout the night.
Takes a lot more to organize a SeaCompresssion or a big WareHouse party than FF.
WTF: Rent some land, deal with the insurance fucks, hire DJs, collect the money and BOOM!
450 is a tiny number of people for a weekend event and somehow they all seem to know each other.
"Can you really imagine that the organizers want to be responsible.."
Responsible? What happened to 'radical self reliance? People are responsible for themselves!
"clean up crew"???? If people weren't such pigs and took LNT to heart you wouldn't need a clean up crew!
Which brings me to "Radical Inclusiveness". FF really drops the ball on that one. Seemed that everyone we
"met" last year was there to play with their "friends". Fuck opening up to anyone new! Seemed to be pervasive!
FF seems to strut the "Burning Man" ethos, but really falls face down when 'acting it out'.
Maybe someone needs to fire up another regional event because 450 just leaves out too many people!

Unfortunately It's hard to find a safe woodsy venue in this part of the country that is willing to have that many people on their land. Also, there aren't enough people volunteering to help run the event to support more people attending. If you want to help organize, attend meetings, ranger, greet, figure out the logistics of parking, portapotties, insurance, space for camping, neighbors not enjoying the sound level or clothing of the attendants, etc- it would certainly help FF be able to handle a larger number of attendants in the future! :) But not enough people are stepping up to the plate to help, cause they can't or don't want to.

By "responsible", i think the poster didn't mean feeding them or keeping an eye on them, but more like liability issues, and other scary things like police showing up and the R.A.V.E. act taking the owners land.

I volunteered as a ranger and fire safety my first year there (two years ago) and was gifted a ticket by a local Bostonian lass, who bought hers in the rush sales.

I have been unable to get tickets last year and this year. I've never seen an ticket offer geared at ensuring that volunteers are there in sufficient quantity. There are even local volunteers who do not have tickets this year due to the mess-up in ticket sales.

I live in Nova Scotia, but I would be willing to drive down four or five days earlier to support the event.

The argument about lacking volunteers is a hollow one. FF organizers don't seem to be open to inviting volunteers.

Sadly, I have to agree that Firefly is an exclusive Boston-only event reserved for "in-crowd" locals.

Actually, the ranger announce list has asked if there are any ticket less rangers this year and they are working on getting them tickets. And 2 years ago, I got a ticket through the ranger list after all the tickets were sold out- because I wanted to ranger.

Soo... I would say there is an effort to get volunteers tickets, and I'm sure all the event organizers have tickets for helping organize. but i think you already have to be involved in the volunteer mailing lists or have volenteered in the past, they're not going to announce "hey anyone who wants to volenteer, you can have a ticket" because a lot of people will say they will, won't show up for their shift or do a half hearted job.

I should add to this post that signing up to be a ranger does not guarantee you a ticket or an opportunity for a ticket. It's just that once you become part of the regular ranger crew, people remember you for the good things that you do and are more likely to help you out. Typically this happens because of another ranger having an extra ticket. This year, the Firefly board did extend an extra ticket opportunity to a few rangers, but it was a careful approval process.

So yeah, as you said, it's not like you can just volunteer and expect a ticket.

So you would rather have one night in an airplane hangar, rather than an all weekend event in the woods of vermont?

Oh, yeah, did you know that FF has, so far in the past, been an outhouse event? Do you want to volunteer to dig 10 more 6 foot holes in the ground?

Have you tried to "rent some land" in Vermont... where you only charge people $40 for a weekend?

Djs at FF aren't "hired." They are our friends.

I agree that people *should* be responsible enough to not leave any trace... but that's really living in a fantasy land.

As far as firing up another event, go nuts. Good luck finding a space, getting the insurance, getting the volunteers and pulling it off... remember we're talking about a weekend, not some single night in a city....

Finally, God forbid a group of friends wants to hang out in the woods, away from the city they reside in. Sorry, I thought that's what a "regional" event was all about.

                Hey Daniel,
You're right. In the past, we used to have to dig out houses. We actually rented porta-johns last year and are doing the same this year.

As for Leave No Trace (LNT), I hardly think it's a fantasy to pack out what you pack in. It's not that hard. And each person who helps and says that it IS possible makes it that much more part of the culture so that LNT becomes automatic rather than a fantasy.

I know you, you know me. Help me out, here! :-)

The limit was 3 tickets per person this year, and yes I bought 3 so I could give them to my friend who didn't have credit cards or internet access... they will not go to waste. :)

If you join the firefly blink mailing list, a lot of people hoping there tickets won't go to waste post on there, hoping to find a buyer! :) As a fellow ranger, I suggest... if you have interest in rangering again, I suggest that you speak to Ranger Preztel, (I can get you contact info, message me) and he will keep a look out for extra tickets to make sure they go to rangers.
